Mauritius

“You gather the idea that Mauritius was made first, and then heaven; and that heaven was copied after Mauritius.” Mark Twain, “Following the equator” 1897

Well, Its quite encouraging to say that Mauritius has amongst the best beaches in the world. and the rest ? they are just mindblowing, one afer the other.  well, i know we have many foreign visitors coming to the blog very often, well.. i’ll try to describe the Island.. I know, one picture is worth a few millions of words.. lol but unfortunately, bbzush the genius who always uploads my pictures is not here today.. :( so, the tons of pictures i have will be uploades shortly :)

Well.. lets do a bit of history.. Mauritius was first discovered by the Arabs in the 15 hundreds but the first settlement started by the arival of the Dutch in 1598. They stayed for a while, killed all our dodos, took away all our ebony trees and left the island because of frequent cyclone visits. However, they left sugar cane behind them. Then came the Fench around 1710 to make Mauritius an agricultural country. the introduced a lot of plants for cultivation and many settled here, however, the British took over the island after  battle against the french and that happened in 1810 and mauritius remained a British colony until we got our independence in 1968.

After the independence, Mauritius found itself with a lot of Major problems facing the population. Agriculture which was the pillar of the economy started to shrink. and many persons started to find themselves jobless. So, the start of industrialisation started here.. in 1971 a lot of textile industries started to open their doors and sugarfactories started to close down one after the other. At the same time, the tourism sector started booming and many hotels started to grow up like mushrooms near the coast. ( many sugar mill owners converted to hotel owners btw )

Mauritius started to Prosper little by little. We started having asphalted roads and many services started to pop out like telecomunications etc.. since a few years time, Government policies started to point out on the ICT sector which they want to make one of our pillar of our economy. we had the opening of 2 cybercities in a timelaps of 4 years.

Tats a lot ! i’ll continue next time, and by the time bbzush comes, i shall post a few snaps of the island which i took.

Afterall, it’s not just about the country, it’s also about the people of the country. I think a healthy and happy population will make the country more appealing to foreigners.
